Podcast#3

Define principles of design? Concepts used to arrange the structural elements of a composition.

What do the principles of design affect? It affects the expressive content on the message of the work.

What is the principle of repetition? Repeating some aspect or element of the design throughout the entire document.

Describe ways that the principle of repetition helps the composition/audience? Repetition helps the viewer navigate through the piece.

What are ways that you can incorporate repetition into your designs? You can use bold fonts. thick lines, certain bullet, color, design elements, particular format, spatial relationship.

What should you avoid when working with repetition? Do not repeat so much that it becomes annoying or overwhelming.

What is the principle of proportion/scale? The relative size and scale of the various elements in a design.

What is the most universal standard of measure when judging size? Is the human body.

How can the principle of proportion/scale be used as an attention getter? Architectural spaces intended to impress are usually scaled to a size that dwarfs the viewer. unusual or unexpected scale can be used as an attention getter.

What is the principle of balance? Distribution between the heavy and light elements on a page.

Which kinds of elements/shapes visually weigh heavier/greater?  Weight of an element is the size, shape, and tone. Large elements look heavier then smaller elements.

What is another name for symmetrical balance? Formal Balance

Define symmetrical balance? the weight of a composition is distributed around a central vertical or horizontal axis.

What is another name for asymmetrical balance? informal Balance

Define asymmetrical balance? the weight of a composition is not evenly distributed around the axis.

What is the principle of emphasis? stressing of a particular are of focus rather than the maze of details of equal importance. Creates a center of focal point.

What happens to a design that has no focus? the viewer does not know what to look at first or what the image is about.

What is a focal point and how is it created? created by making one element dominate with all other areas contributing but subordinate.

How many components of a composition can be a focal point? It may be the largest, darkest, brightest, or most complex piece in the image.
What ways can emphasis be created in a design? contrasting the primary element with 5 subordinate. by sudden change in direction, size, shape, texture, color, tone, or line.
What is the principle of unity? unity is the "wholeness" or composition.

What three ways can unity be obtained?
1. Putting objects close to one another.

2. Using the same shape or similar textures, colors etc.

3. direct lines that travel around the design,

What is the principle of variety? pertains to difference and diversity. It's what makes apiece of work or art interesting.

What ways can a designer add variety to a design? Vary texture, color, and shape.

Why is it important to find the right balance between unity and variety? To much unity can be to boring. To much variety can look chaotic.

What is figure? A form, silhouette, or shape.

What is another name for figure? positive Space

What is ground? surrounding area around figure is ground.

What is another name for ground? Negative Space

Why must a designer consider the composition as a whole? So you can make an image more clear.

What is the principle of rhythm? continuity, recurrences or organized movement in space and time.

How is rhythm achieved? by the repetition of a line, shape, visual tone or texture.

What three ways can rhythm occur in a design?
1. between the elements being the same size and shape.

2. with a more organic flow of movement

3. a sequence of shapes through a progression of steps.

How does rhythm help a composition/design? help deliver a message or add 'life' and interaction

What is the principle of contrast? when 2 related elements are different

How can contrast help a design? help guide the viewer through the piece of work

What is wrong with having too much or too little contrast in a design? to much is confusing and to little is boring

What is the key to working with contrast? balance

What are some common ways of creating contrast? creating difference in size, value, texture, color, shape, alignment, direction, or movement.
